Monuments Maintained by ASI

The Minister for Culture and Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation Kumari Selja has said that there are 3677 monuments/sites declared as of national importance under the provisions of the Ancient Monuments, Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 1958 within the jurisdiction of the Archaeological Survey of India. 

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today she said, the conservation, preservation, maintenance and development of environs of centrally protected monuments, creating of tourist related amenities (e.g. drinking water, toilet blocks, facilities for physically challenged, pathways, cultural notice boards/signage, vehicle parking, cloak rooms, etc.) at the centrally protected monuments/sites are the regular activities which the ASI undertakes as per needs and availability of resources. 

She said, the protected monuments under the Archaeological Survey of India include temples, mosques and churches, most of which are not under worship. Specific data about the monuments among these which are at present under worship is not separately maintained.
